(Second chain) Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned Sayyida Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) and praised her for a long time. The same jealousy overcame me that overcomes women, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! Allah Almighty has given you a substitute for that old woman of Quraysh with red gums. Upon hearing this, the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) changed so much that I had never seen him in that manner, except at the time of the descent of revelation or when a cloud appeared, until he would know whether it was mercy or punishment.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of “the red gums of Sayyidah Aisha” is that Sayyidah Khadijah radi Allahu anha had grown old, to the extent that her teeth had fallen out, and because of this, the whiteness in her mouth had disappeared and only the redness of her gums remained. In response, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, declaring Sayyidah Khadijah as the unparalleled Mother of the Believers, mentioned her praiseworthy qualities. The standard of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was the great achievements of Sayyidah Khadijah.

The scholars have made a very beautiful point on this occasion, which is that leniency has been shown regarding women’s jealousy and rivalry, because this is the nature of ordinary women. There is no fixed rule or formula for their endurance or lack thereof; their temperament overlooks the greatest of virtues and forgives the gravest of faults. In the morning, a woman may be praising someone, and by evening, she may be opposing the same person. This is why the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not scold Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha on this occasion.

The reason for the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam anxiety when clouds appeared was that perhaps there might be punishment in them, as Allah the Exalted has said: {فَلَمَّا رَاَوْہُ عَارِضًا مُّسْتَقْبِلَ اَوْدِیَتِہِمْ قَالُوْا ھٰذَا عَارِض’‘ مُّمْطِرُنَا بَلْ ھُوَ مَا اسْتَعْجَلْتُمْ بِہٖرِیْح’‘ فِیْھَا عَذَاب’‘ اَلِیْم’‘۔ تُدَمِّرُکُلَّ شَیْئٍ بِاَمْرِ رَبِّھَا فَاَصْبَحُوْا لَا یُرٰٓی اِلَّا مَسٰکِنُہُمْ کَذٰلِکَ نَجْزِی الْقَوْمَ الْمُجْرِمِیْنَ۔} “Then, when they saw the punishment as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, ‘This is a cloud bringing us rain!’ (No), rather it is what you sought to hasten: a wind wherein is a painful punishment. It will destroy everything by the command of its Lord.” Thus they became such that nothing could be seen except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense the criminal people. (Surah al-Ahqaf: 24, 25)
