It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: O Messenger of Allah! Your uncle Abu Talib used to protect you and benefit you? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Because of this, he will be in fire reaching up to his ankles, and if it were not for me, he would have been in the lowest level of the fire.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The general rule of the Shari‘ah is that on the Day of Resurrection, no intercession will be accepted on behalf of any disbeliever. This is a special distinction (khasiyyah) of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that his intercession will be accepted for Abu Talib, due to which, instead of severe punishment, he will receive a lighter punishment.
