It is narrated from Masruq that Sayyiduna Khabbab bin Al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was a blacksmith in Makkah. I did some work for ‘As bin Wa’il and some dirhams of mine accumulated with him. One day I went to him to demand my payment, but he said: I will not give you these dirhams until you disbelieve in Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I said: By Allah! I will never disbelieve in Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), until such a time comes that you die and are then resurrected. He replied: When I am resurrected, I will have wealth and children. In another narration, it is stated: He said: So indeed, when I die and am then resurrected, I will have wealth and children there, and at that time I will repay you this debt. Sayyiduna Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Allah Almighty revealed this verse: Have you seen him who disbelieved in Our verses and said, “I will surely be given wealth and children”? Has he looked into the unseen, or has he taken a promise from the Most Merciful? No! We will record what he says and will increase for him from the punishment extensively. And We will inherit from him what he mentions, and he will come to Us alone. (Surah Maryam: 77–80)

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The reply of Amr ibn al-As was filled with sarcasm and mockery. The meaning of these verses is that Allah, the Exalted, is saying that this claim which Amr ibn al-As is making—does he possess knowledge of the unseen, that he will have wealth and children there as well? Or does he have a covenant with Allah? Certainly not; this is nothing but mockery and ridicule of the divine verses. The wealth and children he is speaking of—we are their inheritors, meaning that with death, his connection to them will be severed, and he will come to Our presence alone, neither wealth will accompany him, nor children, nor any group. However, there will be punishment, which We will continue to increase for him and for people like him.
