It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Abu Jahl said: If I see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) praying by the Ka'bah, I will trample his neck. Upon this statement of his, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If he had done so, the angels would have seized him before the people. If the Jews had wished for death, they would surely have died and seen their abode in Hell. And if those who challenged the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to a mutual curse (mubahala) had come out, they would have returned in such a state that neither their wealth nor their families would have remained.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Further mention of Abu Jahl is in the next hadith.
The Jews’ wishing for death, regarding this Allah the Exalted has said: {قُلْاِنْکَانَتْلَکُمُالدَّارُالْاٰخِرَۃُعِنْدَاللّٰہِخَالِصَۃًمِّنْدُوْنِالنَّاسِفَتَمَنَّوُاالْمَوْتَاِنْکُنْتُمْصٰدِقِیْنَ۔وَلَنْیَّتَمَنَّوْہُاَبَدًابِمَاقَدَّمَتْاَیْدِیْھِمْوَاللّٰہُعَلِیْم’‘ بِالظّٰلِمِیْنَ۔} … Say, if the home of the Hereafter with Allah is exclusively for you, to the exclusion of all other people, then wish for death, if you are truthful. But they will never wish for it, because of what their hands have sent ahead, and Allah is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers. (Surah al-Baqarah: 94, 95)
And regarding Mubahala, the statement of Allah the Exalted is: {فَمَنْحَآجَّکَفِیْہِمِنْبَعْدِمَاجَآئَکَمِنَالْعِلْمِفَقُلْتَعَالَوْانَدْعُاَبْنَآئَنَاوَاَبْنَآئَکُمْوَنِسَآئَنَاوَنِسَآئَکُمْوَاَنْفُسَنَاوَاَنْفُسَکُمْثُمَّنَبْتَھِلْفَنَجْعَلْلَّعْنَتَاللّٰہِعَلَیالْکٰذِبِیْنَ۔} … Then whoever disputes with you concerning it after knowledge has come to you, say, “Come! Let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us supplicate earnestly and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars.” (Surah Aal Imran: 61)
This verse is called the verse of Mubahala. The meaning of Mubahala is: for two parties to invoke a curse, that is, to supplicate against each other. The intent is that when there is a dispute and disagreement between two parties regarding the truth or falsehood of a matter, and it does not seem to be resolved through arguments, then both should supplicate in the court of Allah, saying: O Allah, send Your curse upon whichever of us is lying.
