It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I secluded myself in the Cave of Hira for a month. When I completed this period and descended to the open area of the valley, I was called. I looked in front of me, behind me, to my right, and to my left, but I saw nothing. Then I was called again. I looked in the same way, but I could not see anyone. Then I was called again. This time, when I raised my head, I saw that the angel was sitting on a throne in the air. In another narration: He was sitting on a throne between the heaven and the earth. This caused me to tremble severely. I went to Khadijah and said: Cover me with a blanket. So they covered me with a blanket and poured water over me. Then Allah Almighty revealed these verses: O you who are wrapped in a blanket, arise and warn, and magnify your Lord, and purify your garments.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … According to the majority of scholars, the first revelation consists of the verses of {اِقْرَاْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّکَ الَّذِیْ خَلَقَ }. The hadith of Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah radi Allahu anhu refers to the second revelation, which was sent down after the pause in revelation (fatrah al-wahy). Consider the following context of this hadith:

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah radi Allahu anhu, while describing the pause in revelation, narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “While I was walking, I suddenly heard a voice from the sky. I raised my gaze and saw that the angel who had come to me at Hira was sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I was terrified of him and returned home, saying, ‘Wrap me up! Wrap me up!’ So my family wrapped me in a cloth, and Allah the Exalted revealed: {یَا أَیُّہَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ قُمْ فَأَنْذِرْإِلٰی قَوْلِہِوَالرُّجْزَ فَاہْجُر}. After that, the revelation became frequent and continuous.” … Once, I was walking when suddenly I heard a voice from the direction of the sky. I looked up and saw that the angel who had come to me in the cave of Hira was sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I became alarmed, and as soon as I reached home, I said, “Cover me with a garment, cover me with a garment.” So the members of my household covered me with a cloth, and Allah the Exalted revealed these verses: {یَا أَیُّھَا الْمُدَّثِّرْ قُمْ فَأَنْذِرْ وَرَبَّکَ فَکَبِّرْ وَثَیَابَکَ فَطَھِّرْوَالرُّجْزَ فَاہْجُرْ}. After this, the revelation began to descend frequently and in abundance. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim) Hafiz Ibn Kathir said that this is the preserved context, and it clearly shows that there had already been some revelation before this.
