Hadith 10478

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: My maternal aunt, the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: If your people had not recently abandoned polytheism or the era of ignorance, I would have demolished the Ka'bah, brought its door level with the ground, and made two doors—one to the east and one to the west—and I would have added six cubits to it from the side of Hatim, because when the Quraysh rebuilt it, they had reduced its size.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Quraysh had only installed the eastern door, and that too was elevated above ground level. Their purpose in this was that not everyone could enter the House of Allah (Bayt Allah); rather, they themselves would allow entry to whomever they wished and prevent whomever they wished. When Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr radi Allahu anhu gained control over Makkah al-Mukarramah, he fulfilled the wish of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam by including the Hatim within the structure and reconstructing it upon the foundations of Ibrahim alayhis salam, and he installed two doors—one to the east and the other to the west—so that people would enter from one door and exit from the other.

Then, when Hajjaj ibn Yusuf killed Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr radi Allahu anhu, he wrote to the then Umayyad caliph, Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, that Ibn al-Zubayr had made this change based on his own opinion. Therefore, Abd al-Malik ordered that the structure of the Ka‘bah be restored to its previous form, and so it was done.

Later, Caliph Mahdi or his father, Caliph Mansur, during his reign, consulted Imam Malik rahimahullah, saying that they wished to restore the structure of the Ka‘bah to the form rebuilt by Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr radi Allahu anhu. But Imam Malik rahimahullah, giving a wise reply, said: I dislike this, lest the kings make this structure a plaything. Thus, they abandoned their intention, and to this day, the same design of the Ka‘bah remains.
