عَنْ وَاثِلَةَ بْنِ الْأَسْقَعِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ اصْطَفَى مِنْ وَلَدِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ بَنِي إِسْمَاعِيلَ كِنَانَةَ وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ بَنِي كِنَانَةَ قُرَيْشًا وَاصْطَفَى مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ وَاصْطَفَانِي مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah bin Asqa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah Almighty selected Isma’il from the children of Ibrahim, from the descendants of Isma’il He selected Kinanah, from the descendants of Kinanah He selected Quraysh, from Quraysh He selected Banu Hashim, and from Banu Hashim He selected me.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: From this hadith it is understood that, as a category, the Arabs are superior to the non-Arabs (‘ajam), then among the Arabs, the Quraysh are superior, among the Quraysh, Banu Hashim are superior, and among Banu Hashim, the most virtuous is Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). In fact, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is the most virtuous among all of humanity.
Allah Ta‘ala granted superiority and excellence to him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in every respect. In this hadith, the excellence of his (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) lineage is mentioned.
