Hadith 10431

Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to narrate to us traditions about the Children of Israel for most of the night, and would stand only for the obligatory prayer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the history of Banu Isra'il, there are many instructive incidents mentioned, as an example is given below. Those people at times became deserving of Allah Ta'ala's blessings, and at other times, they became worthy of His punishments. Some of their rulings remain applicable to the Muslim Ummah, while others have been abrogated.

Jabir bin Abdullah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Relate from Banu Isra'il, and there is no harm, for indeed there were wondrous things among them." Then he began to narrate, saying: "A group from Banu Isra'il set out until they came to one of their cemeteries. They said: 'If only we prayed two units (rak‘ah) of prayer and supplicated to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, that He would bring forth for us a man from among those who have died, so that we may ask him about death.' So they did so. While they were in that state, a man of wheat-colored complexion raised his head from a grave among those graves, with the mark of prostration (sujud) between his eyes. He said: 'O you people! What do you want from me? I died a hundred years ago, yet the heat of death has not subsided from me until now. So supplicate to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to return me as I was.'" …

You may narrate from Banu Isra'il (their traditions); there is no harm in it, for among them are some extraordinary matters. Then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself said: A group from Banu Isra'il set out and passed by one of their cemeteries. They said: If we pray two units (rak‘ah) of prayer and supplicate to Allah Ta'ala to bring forth for us a dead person (alive from his grave), so that we may ask him about death. So they did so. While they were doing this, a wheat-colored man raised his head from the grave, with the mark of prostration on his forehead. He said: O you! What do you want from me? I died a hundred years ago, but the heat of death has not yet subsided from me, even until now. So supplicate to Allah Ta'ala to return me to the state I was in.

(Ibn Abi Shaybah: 9/62, Musnad al-Bazzar: 1/108/192, Sahihah: 2926)

The main subject of this hadith is concern for the Hereafter, that even after a hundred years, the heat of death had not subsided. This hadith also shows that it is permissible to narrate from Banu Isra'il their traditions, but neither should they be affirmed nor denied.
