بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي صِفَتِهِ وَ شَمَائِلِهِ وَ نُزُولِهِ آخِرَ الزَّمَان وَحُكْمِهِ وَ مُدَّةٍ مَكْثِهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَحَجُهِ وَ فَنَاءِ كُلِّ مِلَّةِ غَيْرِ الْإِسْلامِ وَ وَفَاتِهِChapter: What has been reported regarding his description, characteristics, his descent at the end of time, his rule, the length of his stay on earth, his pilgrimage, the extinction of every religion except Islam, and his death
Hadith 10418

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ((الْأَنْبِيَاءُ إِخْوَةٌ لِعَلَّاتٍ أُمَّهَاتُهُمْ شَتَّى وَدِينُهُمْ وَاحِدٌ وَأَنَا أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِعِيسَى بْنِ مَرْيَمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ لِأَنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ نَبِيٌّ وَإِنَّهُ نَازِلٌ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَاعْرِفُوهُ رَجُلًا مَرْبُوعًا إِلَى الْحُمْرَةِ وَالْبَيَاضِ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبَانِ مُمَصَّرَانِ كَأَنَّ رَأْسَهُ يَقْطُرُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يُصِبْهُ بَلَلٌ فَيَدُقُّ الصَّلِيبَ وَيَقْتُلُ الْخِنْزِيرَ وَيَضَعُ الْجِزْيَةَ وَيَدْعُو النَّاسَ إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ فَيُهْلِكُ اللَّهُ فِي زَمَنِهِ الْمِلَلَ كُلَّهَا إِلَّا الْإِسْلَامَ وَيُهْلِكُ اللَّهُ فِي زَمَانِهِ الْمَسِيحَ الدَّجَّالَ وَتَقَعُ الْأَمَنَةُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ حَتَّى تَرْتَعَ الْأَسْوَدُ مَعَ الْإِبِلِ وَالنِّمَارُ مَعَ الْبَقَرِ وَالذِّئَابُ مَعَ الْغَنَمِ وَيَلْعَبَ الصِّبْيَانُ بِالْحَيَّاتِ لَا تَضُرُّهُمْ فَيَمْكُثُ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً ثُمَّ يُتَوَفَّى وَيُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ الْمُسْلِمُونَ)) وَزَادَ فِي رِوَايَةٍ ((وَيُدَفِّنُونَهُ))
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The noble Prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different but their religion is one. I am the closest to ‘Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) in this world and the Hereafter. There is no prophet between me and him. Indeed, he is about to descend, so recognize him. He is a man of moderate height, his complexion is reddish-white, he will be wearing two light yellow garments, it will seem as if water is dripping from his head though it will not be wet (meaning he will appear extremely clean and radiant). He will break the cross, kill the swine, abolish the jizya, and invite people to Islam. So, in his time, Allah Almighty will abolish all religions except Islam. Allah will destroy the false messiah (al-Masih ad-Dajjal) during his era. There will be such peace and security on earth that snakes will graze with camels, leopards with cows, and wolves with sheep. Children will play with snakes and they will not harm them. ‘Isa (peace be upon him) will remain on earth for forty years, then he will pass away, and the Muslims will perform his funeral prayer and bury him.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … ‘Isa alayhis salam was the last prophet to come before the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. It is the unanimously agreed-upon belief of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama‘ah that ‘Isa alayhis salam was raised alive to the heavens, and near the Day of Judgment he will descend from the heavens, after which he will pass away and the Muslims will perform his funeral prayer. ‘Isa alayhis salam will descend during the era of Imam Mahdi and will remain for seven years. During his time, there will be peace and security and abundance of wealth and prosperity. Wherever there is humanity, there will be Islam; all other religions will come to an end. The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:
{وَمَا قَتَلُوْہُ وَمَا صَلَبُوْہُ وَلٰکِنْ شُبِّہَ لَہُمْ وَاِنَّ الَّذِیْنَ اخْتَلَفُوْا فِیْہِ لَفِیْ شَکٍّ مِّنْہُ مَا لَہُمْ بِہٖمِنْعِلْمٍاِلَّااتِّبَاعَالظَّنِّوَمَاقَتَلُوْہُیَقِیْنًا۔ بَلْ رَّفَعَہُ اللّٰہُ اِلَیْہِ وَکَانَ اللّٰہُ عَزِیْزًا حَکِـیْمًا۔ وَاِنْ مِّنْ اَہْلِ الْکِتٰبِ اِلَّا لَیُؤْمِنَنَّ بِہٖقَبْلَمَوْتِہٖوَیَوْمَ الْقِیٰمَۃِیَکُوْنُ عَلَیْہِمْ شَہِیْدًا۔} … “And they did not kill him (‘Isa alayhis salam) nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise. And there is none from the People of the Book but that he will surely believe in him before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness.” (Surah al-Nisa: 157, 158, 159)
In this narration, there is mention of his staying for forty years. The commentator of Abu Dawud, quoting Hafiz Ibn Kathir, has presented this reconciliation that what is meant is the total lifespan of ‘Isa alayhis salam, and it is also well-known that when he was raised to the heavens, his age was thirty-three years. (Awn al-Ma‘bud: 2/1987) And Allah knows best.
The meaning of abolishing jizyah is that there will be only one religion in the world; there will not remain any non-Muslim who, in the capacity of a dhimmi, would pay jizyah.
In his era, peace will become so widespread that even harmful animals will not harm anyone.
