It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: There is no one among the children of Adam except that he has committed a mistake, or intended to commit a mistake, except Yahya bin Zakariya (peace be upon him), and it is not permissible for anyone to say: I am better than Yunus bin Matta (peace be upon him).
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Allah Ta’ala has mentioned Yahya alayhis salam in His Book with these beautiful words:
“O Yahya! Hold fast to the Book with strength.” And We granted him judgment while still a child. And compassion from Us and purity, and he was ever God-fearing. And dutiful to his parents, and he was not arrogant or disobedient. And peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the day he will be raised alive. (Surah Maryam: 12–15)
Hafiz Ibn Kathir rahimahullah has said in his Tafsir: In accordance with the divine glad tidings, Yahya alayhis salam was born to Zakariya alayhis salam. Allah Ta’ala taught him the Torah, which was recited among them and whose rulings the righteous and the prophets would convey to others. At that time, he was still a child; thus, Allah also mentioned this unique blessing—that He granted a child and made him a scholar of the heavenly Book from childhood itself, and commanded him to learn the Book of Allah with eagerness, striving, effort, and strength. Along with this, We granted him, even in his young age, understanding and knowledge, strength and resolve, wisdom and forbearance. From childhood, he inclined towards good deeds and, with effort and sincerity, engaged in the worship of Allah and service to creation. When children would invite him to play, he would reply, “We were not created for play.” The existence of Yahya alayhis salam was a manifestation of Our mercy for Zakariya alayhis salam, over which none but Us had power.
It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu, who said: By Allah! I do not know what the meaning of “hanan” is. In the language, it comes in the sense of love, compassion, mercy, etc. Apparently, the meaning seems to be that We commanded him from childhood and granted him compassion, love, and purity. Yahya alayhis salam was protected from every filth, every sin, and disobedience. Only righteous deeds were the summary of his life; he was completely free from sins and disobedience to Allah. Along with this, he was obedient and dutiful to his parents and treated them well. He never opposed his parents in any matter, never went against their command, never did anything after their prohibition, and no trait of arrogance or disobedience was found in him. In exchange for these beautiful qualities and praiseworthy characteristics, he received security and peace from Allah in all three states: the day of his birth, the day of his death, and the day he will be raised (on the Day of Resurrection). These three occasions are times of anxiety and unfamiliarity. When a human emerges from his mother’s womb, he sees a new world, which is far greater and completely different from the world he has known until then. On the day of death, he encounters a creation with which he has never had any connection in life, never seen them. Similarly, on the Day of Gathering, he finds himself in a vast assembly, which is a completely new thing, and is left astonished. Thus, in these three times, Yahya alayhis salam received peace from Allah. Imam Qatadah rahimahullah says that he never committed a sin.
