Hadith 10393

(Second chain) The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The Children of Israel were told to enter the door in a state of prostration, but they entered dragging themselves on their buttocks, and they were commanded to say "Hittah" (forgiveness), but they altered this command and said: "Hintah fi sha'rah" (wheat in a stalk).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of "hittah" is: forgive our sins, that is, the Children of Israel were commanded to seek forgiveness and to prostrate in gratitude to Allah Ta'ala.

The state of rebellion and arrogance of the Israelites was such that they used to mock and ridicule the divine commands. In reality, when any nation declines in morals and character, its attitude towards the divine commands becomes just like this.

Hafiz Ibn Kathir has said in his Tafsir: After forty years, the Children of Israel came out of the wilderness (Maidan Tiyyah) with Yusha (alayhis salam) and conquered Bayt al-Maqdis on a Friday evening. For them, the sun was held back for a while. When they conquered it, they were commanded to enter the city gate prostrating in gratitude to Allah Ta'ala, because Allah Ta'ala had granted them victory, returned their land to them, and saved them from the wilderness and misguidance.

But these people showed ingratitude for the blessings of Allah Ta'ala and, as it were, made a mockery of His command.
