It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: The night I was taken on the Night Journey, I passed by Musa (peace be upon him) and I saw him standing and performing prayer in his grave. In one narration, this additional statement is mentioned: This grave was near a red mound.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The question arises: Why did Musa (alayhis salam) strike the Angel of Death? There are two answers to this: (1) Musa (alayhis salam) was not aware that the person was an emissary of Allah Ta’ala, who had come to seize his soul. He thought that it was an ordinary man who wanted to kill him, so he acted in self-defense. (2) Allah Ta’ala had granted Musa (alayhis salam) permission to strike the angel in order to test the angel, and Allah Ta’ala does as He wills to test His creation. (See Sharh Nawawi Sahih Muslim: 2/267)
Musa (alayhis salam) requested to be near Bayt al-Maqdis because it is a place of honor, and due to it being the burial place of the noble Prophets and others, it would be more virtuous. However, some scholars are of the opinion that he did not specifically request Bayt al-Maqdis, because he feared that people might fall into tribulation and discord. From this hadith, it is understood that one should choose a place of virtue and greatness for burial, and that one should be buried near the graveyards of the righteous. (See Sharh Nawawi Sahih Muslim: 2/267)
