بَابُ قِصَّةِ مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ مَعَ بَنِي إِسْرَئِيلَ إِذْ «قَالُوا يَا مُوسَى اجْعَلْ لَنَا إِلَهَا كَمَا لَهُمْ آلِهَةً »Chapter: The story of Musa, peace be upon him, with the Children of Israel when they said, "O Musa, make for us a god as they have gods"

عَنْ أَبِي وَاقِدٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُمْ خَرَجُوا عَنْ مَكَّةَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى حُنَيْنٍ قَالَ وَكَانَ لِلْكُفَّارِ سِدْرَةٌ يَعْكُفُونَ عِنْدَهَا وَيُعَلِّقُونَ بِهَا أَسْلِحَتَهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهَا ذَاتُ أَنْوَاطٍ قَالَ فَمَرَرْنَا بِسِدْرَةٍ خَضْرَاءَ عَظِيمَةٍ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ اجْعَلْ لَنَا ذَاتَ أَنْوَاطٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ((قُلْتُمْ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ كَمَا قَالَ قَوْمُ مُوسَى {اجْعَلْ لَنَا إِلَهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ آلِهَةٌ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ تَجْهَلُونَ} إِنَّهَا لَسُنَنٌ لَتَرْكَبُنَّ سُنَنَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ سُنَّةً سُنَّةً))
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Waqid Al-Laithi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he set out from Makkah Mukarramah towards Hunayn in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). On the way, there was a lote tree belonging to the disbelievers; they used to stay near it and hang their weapons on it. It was called Dhat Anwat. The narrator says: When we passed by a lush and large lote tree, we said: O Messenger of Allah! Make for us a Dhat Anwat as they have a Dhat Anwat. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By the One in Whose hand is my soul! You have said exactly what the people of Musa (peace be upon him) said: “Make for us a god just as they have gods.” Indeed, you are an ignorant people. These were the ways of Bani Israel; you will surely follow the ways of those before you, step by step.

Benefits: … The complete verse is: {وَجٰوَزْنَا بِبَنِیْٓ اِسْرَاء ِیْلَ الْبَحْرَ فَاَتَوْا عَلٰی قَوْمٍ یَّعْکُفُوْنَ عَلٰٓی اَصْنَامٍ لَّہُمْ قَالُوْا یٰمُوْسَی اجْعَلْ لَّنَآ اِلٰـہًا کَمَا لَہُمْ اٰلِہَۃٌ قَالَ اِنَّکُمْ قَوْمٌ تَجْـہَلُوْنَ ۔} … And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came upon a people devoted to some idols of theirs. They said, "O Musa! Make for us a god just as they have gods." He said, "Indeed, you are a people behaving ignorantly." (Surah al-A'raf: 138)
Hafiz Ibn Kathir said in his Tafsir: This was the extent of the Children of Israel's inclination towards idol worship, that after witnessing so many signs of Allah's power, as soon as they crossed the sea and saw a group of idolaters sitting in seclusion around their idols, they immediately said to Musa, "Appoint for us something like this as well, so that we may also worship it, just as they have their gods." These disbelievers were Canaanites; according to one opinion, they were from the Lahm tribe. They had fashioned a cow and were worshipping it. Musa alayhis salam replied to them: You are completely unaware of the greatness and majesty of Allah; you do not know that Allah is pure and exalted above any partner or equal. The act these people are engaged in is destructive, and their deed is false.
