It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I passed by Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was sitting in the mosque, and I greeted him with salam, but he looked at me intently and did not reply to my salam. So I went to the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: O Commander of the Faithful! Has anything new appeared in Islam? I said it twice. He said: No, what is the matter? I said: There is nothing, except that I just passed by Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), greeted him with salam, he looked at me intently, but did not reply to my salam. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: What prevented you from replying to your brother’s salam? He said: I did not do any such thing. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Why not, it happened like this, until both of them swore an oath. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes, indeed, and I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance. Just now, when you passed by me, I was recalling in my heart a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). No, by Allah, whenever I remember that hadith, a veil comes over my eyes and my heart. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will also tell you something. One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to tell us something about the first supplication, then a Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and kept him busy. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, I followed him. When I feared that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would reach his house ahead of me, I struck my foot on the ground. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards me and said: Who is this? Abu Ishaq? I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! He said: What is it? I said: By Allah! Nothing, except that you mentioned the first supplication, then this Bedouin came and kept you busy. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, it is the supplication of the man of the fish, when he was in the belly of the fish, he supplicated: {لَا اِلٰہَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ سُبْحَانَکَ اِنِّیْ کُنْتُ مِنَ الظّٰلِمِیْنَ} (There is no deity worthy of worship except You; You are pure; indeed, I am among the wrongdoers). Any Muslim who calls upon his Lord with these words for anything, Allah will answer his call.
