Hadith 10361

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is not permissible for any prophet to say: I am better than Yunus bin Matta.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {تِلْکَ الرُّسُلُ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَھُمْ عَلٰی بَعْضٍ} … These are the Messengers; We have given some of them superiority over others. (Surah al-Baqarah: 253) The meaning of this verse is that some Prophets and Messengers have been granted greater virtue over others.

The purpose of these blessed ahadith is that no Prophet and no person should, out of pride or with the intention of disparagement, say that he is better and superior to Yunus (alayhis salam). However, if a Prophet superior to Yunus (alayhis salam) mentions his own virtue while recounting Allah’s favor or for some other religious benefit, then there is no harm in doing so, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((Ana sayyidu waladi Adam wa la fakhr.)) … I am the leader of the children of Adam, but I do not boast about it.
