It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: Do you not see your people? When they constructed the Kaaba, they reduced it from the foundations of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Sayyida said: O Messenger of Allah! So why do you not rebuild it upon the foundations of Ibrahim (peace be upon him)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If your people had not only recently abandoned disbelief (I would have done so). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: If Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then I think that the reason the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not touch the two corners of the Kaaba on the side of Hatim is because that side of the Kaaba was not upon the foundations of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and his intention was that people should perform the full circumambulation of the House of Allah and circle behind the foundations of Ibrahim (peace be upon him).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … When the Quraysh rebuilt the Ka‘bah, they were unable to maintain the foundations of Ibrahim on the northern side of the House of Allah, and left a portion vacant; this very portion is called the Hijr. In general, the meaning of Hijr is: a place around which a wall has been built. This place is also called Hatim. The meaning of Hatim is: that which has been separated, because this part was separated from the House of Allah. From the wall of the House of Allah, up to five, six, or seven cubits is part of the House of Allah; the entire Hatim is not part of the House of Allah, because when the wall was built, some external area was also included. Whoever prays within the area of five or six cubits should consider that he has prayed inside the House of Allah. Similarly, those performing tawaf (circumambulation) should make their circuit from outside the Hatim.
