عَنْ عُتَيٍّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ شَيْخًا بِالْمَدِينَةِ يَتَكَلَّمُ فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا هَذَا أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ آدَمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ لَمَّا حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ لِبَنِيهِ أَيْ بَنِيَّ إِنِّي أَشْتَهِي مِنْ ثِمَارِ الْجَنَّةِ فَذَهَبُوا يَطْلُبُونَ لَهُ فَاسْتَقْبَلَتْهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَمَعَهُمْ أَكْفَانُهُ وَحَنُوطُهُ وَمَعَهُمُ الْفُؤُوسُ وَالْمَسَاحِي وَالْمَكَاتِلُ فَقَالُوا لَهُمْ يَا بَنِي آدَمَ مَا تُرِيدُونَ وَمَا تَطْلُبُونَ أَوْ مَا تُرِيدُونَ وَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ قَالُوا أَبُونَا مَرِيضٌ قَالُوا فَاشْتَهَى مِنْ ثِمَارِ الْجَنَّةِ قَالُوا لَهُمْ ارْجِعُوا فَقَدْ قُضِيَ قَضَاءُ أَبِيكُمْ فَجَاءُوا فَلَمَّا رَأَتْهُمْ حَوَّاءُ عَرَفَتْهُمْ فَلَاذَتْ بِآدَمَ فَقَالَ إِلَيْكِ عَنِّي فَإِنِّي إِنَّمَا أُوتِيتُ مِنْ قِبَلِكِ خَلِّي بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ مَلَائِكَةِ رَبِّي تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى فَقَبَضُوهُ وَغَسَّلُوهُ وَكَفَّنُوهُ وَحَنَّطُوهُ وَحَفَرُوا لَهُ وَأَلْحَدُوا لَهُ وَصَلَّوْا عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ دَخَلُوا قَبْرَهُ فَوَضَعُوهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَوَضَعُوا عَلَيْهِ اللَّبِنَ ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا مِنَ الْقَبْرِ ثُمَّ حَثَوْا عَلَيْهِ التُّرَابَ ثُمَّ قَالُوا يَا بَنِي آدَمَ هَذِهِ سُنَّتُكُمْ
‘Utayy says: I saw an elder in Madinah Munawwarah, and when I asked about him, people said: This is Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: Indeed, when the time of death for Adam (peace be upon him) drew near, he said to his sons: O my sons! I desire the fruits of Paradise. So they set out to search for these fruits. Ahead, they met angels who had with them a shroud, embalming perfume, axes, shovels, and baskets. They asked them: O sons of Adam! What is your intention, what are you searching for, and where are you going? They said: Our father is ill and wishes to eat the fruits of Paradise. The angels said: Come back, the time of your father’s death has come. So when they arrived and Lady Hawwa’ (may Allah’s mercy be upon her) recognized them, she clung to Adam (peace be upon him), but Adam (peace be upon him) said: Move away, it was because of you that I was afflicted before; move away from between me and the angels of my Lord. So they took his soul, washed him, shrouded him, applied perfume, then dug a pit and made a niche, and performed his funeral prayer. Then they entered the grave, placed him in the grave, laid raw bricks over him, then came out of the grave and poured soil over him and said: O sons of Adam! This is your way.
