Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said during the tribulation of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (peace be upon him): I bear witness that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, soon there will be tribulations; in them, the one sitting will be better than the one standing, the one standing will be better than the one walking, and the one walking will be better than the one running.” A man said: “What do you think if the killer enters upon me in my house and extends his hand towards me to kill me?” He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Be like the son of Adam.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Shari‘ah has given every Muslim the right to take revenge and to defend his life, wealth, and honor. However, the rulings for times of tribulation differ from those of normal circumstances. In times of tribulation, it is not wise to respond to every act of oppression, because in response one may have to endure even greater oppression. Then such a cycle begins that generations are destroyed. The example of the son of Adam alayhis salam that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mentioned is detailed as follows:

The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {وَاتْلُ عَلَیْہِمْ نَبَاَ ابْنَیْ اٰدَمَ بِالْحَقِّ اِذْ قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًا فَتُقُبِّلَ مِنْ اَحَدِہِمَا وَلَمْ یُتَقَبَّلْ مِنَ الْاٰخَرِ قَالَ لَاَقْتُلَنَّکَ قَالَ اِنَّمَا یَتَقَبَّلُ اللّٰہُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِیْنَ۔ لَئِنْ بَسَطْتَّ اِلَیَّیَدَکَ لِتَقْتُلَنِیْ
مَآ اَنَا بِبَاسِطٍ یَّدِیَ اِلَیْکَ لِاَقْتُلَکَ اِنِّیْٓ اَخَافُ اللّٰہَ رَبَّ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ۔ اِنِّیْٓ اُرِیْدُ اَنْ تَبُوْأَ بِاِثْمِیْ وَاِثْمِکَ فَتَکُوْنَ مِنْ اَصْحٰبِ النَّارِ وَذٰلِکَ جَزٰؤُ ا الظّٰلِمِیْنَ۔فَطَوَّعَتْ لَہ نَفْسُہ قَتْلَ اَخِیْہِ فَقَتَلَہُ فَاَصْبَحَ مِنَ الْخٰسِرِیْنَ۔}
… And recite to them in truth the story of Adam’s two sons, when they both offered a sacrifice, and it was accepted from one of them but not accepted from the other. He said, “I will surely kill you.” The other said, “Indeed, Allah accepts only from the righteous. If you stretch out your hand toward me to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand toward you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds. I wish that you would bear my sin and your sin, so you would be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of the wrongdoers.” So his soul permitted him to kill his brother, and he killed him and became among the losers. (Surah al-Ma’idah: 27–30)

The outcome of envy, malice, and rebellion is evil. The one who killed was Qabil, and the one who was killed was Habil.
