It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Who was the first prophet among the prophets? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Adam (peace be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Was Adam (peace be upon him) a prophet? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, he was a prophet, he was spoken to, Allah Almighty created him with His own hand, then breathed His spirit into him and said to him face to face: O Adam.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared the two ahadith mentioned below, related to this subject, to be authentic based on corroborating evidence:

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah radi Allahu anhu reports: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah! Was Adam a prophet?” He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Yes, a prophet who was taught and to whom speech was addressed.” He said: “How long was there between him and Nuh?” He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Ten centuries (or ten generations).” He said: “How long was there between Nuh and Ibrahim?” He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Ten centuries.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah! How many messengers have there been in total?” He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Three hundred and fifteen, a great multitude.”
(Hakim: 2/262, Mu’jam Kabir of Tabarani: 8/139, Silsilah al-Sahihah: 3289)

Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, mentioning a mawquf corroborating narration for this hadith, said: Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas said: Between Nuh and Adam were ten centuries; all the people were upon the true Shari’ah, then they differed, so Allah the Exalted began sending prophets, so that they might give glad tidings and warnings. The recitation of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud was: {کَانَ النَّاسُ اُمَّۃً وَّاحِدَۃً فَاخْتَلَفُوْا} (Tafsir Tabari: 2/194, Hakim: 2/546)

In this is the statement of an important benefit: that in the beginning, people were one community, pure tawhid was their religion, then later traces of shirk appeared among them. This refutes those philosophers and atheists who say that originally there was shirk, and tawhid came into existence later. (Silsilah al-Sahihah: 3289)

(Sahih Ibn Hibban: 2085, Hakim: 2/262, Silsilah al-Sahihah: 2668)

Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, mentioning corroborating evidence, said: A passage from the lengthy hadith of Abu Umamah radi Allahu anhu is as follows: I said: “O Prophet of Allah! Who was the first prophet?” He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Adam alayhis salam.” I said: “O Prophet of Allah! Was Adam a prophet?” He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Yes, yes, he was a prophet to whom speech was addressed. Allah the Exalted created him with His own hand, then breathed into him of His spirit, then said to him: ‘Adam! Become a figure.’” I said: “O Messenger of Allah! How many prophets were there?” He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “One hundred and twenty-four thousand prophets, among them the number of messengers was (315), a great multitude.”
(Ahmad: 5/265)
