Hadith 10306

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, the sperm remains in its state for forty days, there is no change in it. When forty days pass, it becomes a clot of congealed blood. Then after forty days, it becomes a lump of flesh. Then after forty days, bones are formed. So when Allah Almighty intends to complete its creation, He sends an angel towards it. The angel responsible for this task says: O my Lord! Is it male or female? Fortunate or unfortunate? Short in stature or tall? Deficient in creation or excessive in creation? Also, its sustenance and death? And is it healthy or sick? So all these things are written down. One of the people said: If all this matter has already been decided, then what is the point of action? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You should act, for every person will be directed towards that for which he was created.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … However, in other ahadith, a similar meaning to this narration has been mentioned. One such hadith is as follows:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu, who says: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, who is truthful and believed, informed us and said:

“Verily, the creation of each one of you is brought together in the womb of his mother for forty days as a drop of fluid (nutfah), then he becomes a clot of blood (‘alaqah) for a similar period, then he becomes a morsel of flesh (mudghah) for a similar period. Then the angel is sent to him, who breathes the soul (ruh) into him, and he is commanded with four words: his provision (rizq), his lifespan (ajal), his deeds (‘amal), and whether he will be wretched (shaqi) or blessed (sa‘id). By the One besides Whom there is no deity! Indeed, one of you performs the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is only a handspan between him and it, but the decree (kitab) overtakes him, and so he acts with the deeds of the people of the Fire and enters it. And indeed, a man performs the deeds of the people of the Fire until there is only a handspan between him and it, but the decree (kitab) overtakes him, and so he acts with the deeds of the people of Paradise and enters it.”

(Sahih Bukhari: 3208, 3332; Sahih Muslim: 2643; and the wording is from Ahmad)
