It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: When the verse regarding debt was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, the first to deny will be Adam (peace be upon him). The detail of this is that when Allah Almighty created Adam (peace be upon him) and touched his back, bringing forth from it all his progeny to be born until the Day of Resurrection, and presented this progeny before him, he saw among them a handsome and radiant man and said: O my Lord! Who is this? Allah Almighty said: This is your son Dawud (David). He said: O my Lord! What is his age? Allah Almighty said: Sixty years. He said: O my Lord! Increase his age. Allah Almighty said: No, except that it be increased from your age. The age of Adam (peace be upon him) was one thousand years; he added forty years from his own age to the age of Dawud. Allah Almighty wrote this down and made the angels witnesses to it. When the time of Adam’s (peace be upon him) death came and the angels came to seize his soul, he said: There are still forty years left of my age. It was said to him: You had gifted those forty years to your son Dawud. Adam (peace be upon him) said: I did not do so. Thereupon Allah Almighty revealed the Book and the angels bore witness. But then, the age of Dawud (peace be upon him) was also completed to one hundred years, and Adam’s (peace be upon him) age was completed to one thousand years.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The wording of a narration in Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi is as follows: ((Adam denied, so his progeny denied; Adam forgot and ate from the tree, so his progeny forgot; Adam erred, so his progeny erred)) … Thus, Adam (alayhis salam) denied, and as a result, his offspring also began to deny; Adam (alayhis salam) forgot and ate the fruit of the tree, so his offspring also began to forget; and Adam (alayhis salam) made a mistake, so his offspring also began to make mistakes.

Since this covenant took place in the realm of souls (‘alam al-arwah), it is possible that Adam (alayhis salam) did not remember, or that he forgot. In any case, this hadith shows that forgetfulness, denial, and error have been placed in the nature of human beings, except for those whom Allah, the Exalted, protects.
