Hadith 10283

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Satan passed by me, I caught him and strangled him, until I felt the coolness of his tongue on my hand. He said to me: "You have caused me pain, you have caused me pain."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … However, consider the following narration on this subject:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri radi Allahu anhu, who says: “The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam stood and performed the morning prayer (Salat al-Subh) while he (Abu Sa‘id) was behind him. He (the Prophet) recited (the Qur’an), but the recitation became confused for him. When he finished his prayer, he said: ‘If only you had seen me and Iblis! I reached out with my hand and kept choking him until I felt the coolness of his saliva between these two fingers of mine: the thumb and the one next to it. If it were not for the supplication of my brother Sulayman, he would have been tied up to one of the pillars of the mosque, and the children of Madinah would have played with him. So, whoever among you is able that nothing comes between him and the qiblah (direction of prayer) during prayer, let him do so.’” (Ahmad: 3/82, and it was narrated by Abu Dawud: 699 in summary, Sahihah: 3251)

Although the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was completely protected from satanic attacks, Iblis would continue to express his inner wickedness, and as a result, he would return defeated and disappointed.

Sulayman alayhis salam made this supplication: {وَھَبْ لِیْ مُلْکًا لَایَنْبَغِیْ لِاَحَدٍ مِنْ بَعْدِیْ} (Surah Sad: 35) … “And (O Allah!) grant me a kingdom such as shall not belong to anyone after me.”

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah said: This hadith indicates that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam let Iblis go out of consideration for Sulayman alayhis salam, but it is also possible that the particularity of Sulayman alayhis salam was that he could make the jinn do whatever work he wished.
