It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would hear the sound of thunder and lightning, he would say: O Allah! Do not destroy us with Your wrath, nor ruin us with Your punishment, and grant us safety before that.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: {ھُوَالَّذِیْیُرِیْکُمُالْبَرْقَخَوْفًاوَّطَمَعًاوَّیُنْشِیُٔالسَّحَابَالثِّقَالَ۔وَیُسَبِّحُالرَّعْدُبِحَمْدِہٖوَالْمَلٰٓئِکَۃُمِنْخِیْفَتِہٖوَیُرْسِلُالصَّوَاعِقَفَیُصِیْبُبِھَامَنْیَّشَآئُ} … He it is Who shows you the lightning, inspiring fear and hope, and produces the heavy clouds. And the thunder glorifies Him with His praise, and the angels (also glorify Him) out of fear of Him. And He sends the thunderbolts, then strikes with them whom He wills. (Surah al-Ra’d: 12, 13) That is, Allah, the Exalted, destroys whomever He wills through lightning.
