Agharr says: I bear witness to Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that they bore witness to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Indeed, Allah Almighty grants respite until a third of the night has passed, then Allah Almighty descends (towards the heaven of the world) and says: Is there anyone who asks? Is there anyone who repents? Is there anyone who seeks forgiveness? Is there any sinner? A man said: Does this continue until the break of dawn? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Just as is befitting to the majesty of Allah Ta’ala, He descends to the lowest heaven in accordance with that. We affirm this descent of His without interpretation (ta’wil), but we cannot describe its modality (kayfiyyah)—how He descends. As for the timing of this descent of Ta’ala, there are various narrations transmitted regarding it: The summary of the narrations from Sahih Muslim narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu is as follows: (1) After the first third of the night, (2) after half the night or after two-thirds of the night, (3) in the last third of the night.
Qadi ‘Iyad said: The scholars of hadith (mashayikh al-hadith) are of the opinion that the statement regarding the last third of the night is more preponderant (rajih); this is the meaning found in most narrations.
However, if all the authentic narrations are applied to different circumstances, that is better.
