Hadith 10149

A man from the Juhaina tribe, Aghar, used to narrate to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: O people! Repent to your Lord, for indeed I repent to Allah one hundred times in a single day.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In this, there is encouragement for repentance (tawbah) and seeking forgiveness (istighfar), for the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, who was forgiven—Allah, the Exalted, had pardoned his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam former and latter sins, which in reality were not even sins, but rather, according to "the good deeds of the righteous are considered shortcomings for those brought near (to Allah)" (حَسَنَاتُ الْاَبْرَارِ سَیِّئَات الْمُقَرَّبِیْنَ), these were actions contrary to what was most preferable, which have been described as sins. So then, how can we ordinary people consider ourselves free of the need for repentance and seeking forgiveness, when from head to toe we are immersed in sins? The abundance and continuity of repentance is also necessary so that even those sins committed in a state of unawareness may continue to be forgiven.

Why did the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam use to seek forgiveness? See Hadith number 5629.
