عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمُسْتَبَّانِ مَا قَالَا فَعَلَى الْبَادِئِ مَا لَمْ يَعْتَدِ الْمَظْلُومُ
Syedna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whatever two people who abuse each other say, all the sin will be upon the one who started it, as long as the oppressed does not exceed the limits.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The sin of the quarrel between these two individuals will be recorded against the one who initiated it, because he is the cause of this evil. However, if the oppressed exceeds the oppressor in retaliation, then he himself will be responsible for his excess. The oppressed does have the right to take revenge, but it is necessary that his retaliation does not exceed the oppression that was done to him; otherwise, the oppressed will also be considered an oppressor.
