بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِيمَنْ لَعَنَهُ النَّبِيُّ أَوْ سَبَهُ أَوْ دَعَا عَلَيْهِ وَلَيْسَ هُوَ اهْلُ لِذَلِكَ كَانَ لَهُ زَكَاةٌ وَأَجْرٌ وَرَحْمَةٌChapter: What has been reported regarding those whom the Prophet cursed or insulted or supplicated against, though they were not deserving of it—it became for them purification, reward, and mercy

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ فَوَجَدْتُهُ طَيِّبَ النَّفْسِ فَقُلْتُ لَا أَغْتَنِمَنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَا الطُّفَيْلِ النَّفَرُ الَّذِينَ لَعَنَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ بَيْنِهِمْ مَنْ هُمْ فَهَمَّ أَنْ يُخْبِرَنِي بِهِمْ فَقَالَتْ لَهُ امْرَأَتُهُ سَوْدَةُ مَهْ يَا أَبَا الطُّفَيْلِ أَمَا بَلَغَكَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ فَأَيُّمَا عَبْدٍ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ دَعَوْتُ عَلَيْهِ دَعْوَةً فَاجْعَلْهَا لَهُ زَكَاةً وَرَحْمَةً
O Allah! Indeed, some people followed me, while I did not wish for them to follow me. O Allah! So, whomever I struck or spoke harshly to, make that for him a means of atonement, reward, forgiveness, and mercy. Or as you, peace and blessings be upon him, said.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is understood from this that when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam utters words of supplication against a Muslim, they will become a mercy for him; if he is “a mercy to the worlds” (rahmatan lil-‘alamin), then such is his mercy.
