It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk. When, on the way, he (peace and blessings be upon him) learned that there was a scarcity of water at the place where he was about to arrive, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a proclaimer to announce that no one should precede him (peace and blessings be upon him) to the water. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the water, he saw that some people had already preceded him (peace and blessings be upon him). So he (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed them.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … During the journey of the Battle of Tabuk, the companions (Sahabah kiram) were with you, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, therefore, any supplication of curse (du'a containing la'nat) from you, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, for them will be a means of purification and mercy for them.

Abu Sawar narrates from his maternal uncle, who says: I saw that the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, went aside and some people started following him, and I also walked along with them. The people were walking quickly, and some individuals lagged behind. When the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, came to me, he struck me with something—it was a date palm branch, or a stick, or a miswak, or some other thing. By Allah! It did not hurt me, but I spent that night in contemplation. I said: The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, must have struck me only because of something that Allah, the Exalted, informed him about me. Then I thought that when morning comes, I will go to the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Then Jibril, alayhis salam, descended upon the Noble Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, with this message: Indeed, you are a guardian, so do not break the horns of your flock (i.e., be gentle with them). So when we performed the Fajr prayer or in the morning, the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, said:

O Allah! Indeed, some people followed me, while I did not wish for them to follow me. O Allah! So whoever I struck or spoke harshly to, then make that for him an expiation, a reward, forgiveness, and a mercy. Or as the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, said.
