عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ جَاءَ بِأَمَةٍ سَوْدَاءَ وَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ! إِنَّ عَلَيَّ رَقَبَةً مُؤْمِنَةً فَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَرَى هَذِهِ مُؤْمِنَةً أَعْتِقْهَا، فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((أَتَشْهَدِينَ أَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ؟)) قَالَتْ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: ((أَتُؤْمِنِينَ بِالْبَعْثِ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ؟)) قَالَتْ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: ((أَعْتِقْهَا))
It is narrated from an Ansari companion (may Allah be pleased with him) that he brought a black slave girl and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have to free a Muslim slave. Now, if you consider this slave girl to be a believer, then free her." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked her: "Do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?" She said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then asked: "Do you believe in resurrection after death?" She said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Free her."
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This was the beautiful and wise manner of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, that he would ask questions after considering the occasion and the temperament of the person concerned. In this hadith, he asked about messengership and the Hereafter, whereas in the previous hadith, he had asked about Allah, the Exalted, and about his own self.
