It is narrated from Abu Umair that he was a friend of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him). One day, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came to visit him at his house, but he was not present at home. So he sought permission from his family and asked for a drink. His wife sent a maidservant to the neighbors to bring some drink. When she delayed and the wife cursed her, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) left. When Abu Umair came and said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! People like you cannot be suspected of anything improper. Why did you not greet your brother’s family, sit with them, and drink water, etc.? He said: I did exactly that, but the real matter is that your wife sent her maidservant, she delayed, perhaps the neighbors did not have that thing or, due to their own inclination, did not want to give it, so the maidservant was delayed, because of which your wife cursed her. And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Verily, when something is cursed, if it finds a place for itself in that thing, then fine, otherwise it says: O my Lord! I have been sent towards so-and-so, but I do not see any place for myself in it. So it is said to it: Return to where you came from. So I feared that if the maidservant was excused, the curse would return and I would become its cause.
