Hadith 10085

Narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: The food of the son of Adam has been presented as an example for the world; even if the food is spiced and salted, see what it ultimately becomes.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning is that the son of Adam should not be greedy, covetous, or a slave and devotee of the pleasures of the tongue, because these things are related only up to the throat. Below the throat, no distinction is made in the food as to whether it was delicious or tasteless. Sayyiduna Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “No human ever filled a vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls that keep his back straight. But if he must (eat more), then a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath.” (Tirmidhi) … No person has ever filled a container more evil than his stomach. It is enough for a person to have a few morsels that keep his back upright, and if eating more is necessary, then one third of the stomach should be for his food, one third for his drink, and one third for his breath.
