Hadith 10078

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had a she-camel named ‘Adba’, and no other camel could surpass her. Then one day, a Bedouin came riding his camel and overtook her. This was very hard on the Muslims. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) noticed their distress on their faces, he himself said, “Adba has been left behind.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: “It is a right upon Allah that whatever He raises in this world, He will also lower it.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There is hardly any human being who has not, in his life, experienced worldly rise and fall; otherwise, it is generally observed that after poverty comes wealth, and after wealth comes poverty; after deprivation come high positions, and after high positions comes deprivation. At one time, a person sees himself held in great esteem, but there also comes a time when he becomes a person of no consequence in society. Even the great tyrants like Pharaoh, Qarun, Nimrod, Abu Jahl, and Abu Lahab could not exempt themselves from this law.

This is a law related to this world and the people of this world, not concerning religion and the people of religion. The destiny of religion and those who act upon it is such exaltation and elevation that it always remains in ascendancy; it has no decline.

The commentator of Abu Dawud, Allamah Azimabadi rahimahullah, has said: In this hadith, disinterest in the world is encouraged, for whatever attains elevation in it ultimately becomes lowly. Hafiz Mundhiri says: Some have said that in this hadith, the status of the world in the sight of Allah Ta'ala is described—that it is a contemptible and lowly thing. In reality, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam wishes to warn his ummah that they should abandon boasting and pride based on worldly wealth and possessions, and every person of religion and wisdom should adopt disinterest in the world and, upon attaining it, should refrain from asserting superiority over others, because worldly goods are very little and their reckoning is very lengthy.
