عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ لِثَوْبَانَ كَيْفَ أَنْتَ يَا ثَوْبَانُ إِذَا تَدَاعَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْأُمَمُ كَتَدَاعِيكُمْ عَلَى قَصْعَةِ الطَّعَامِ يُصِيبُونَ مِنْهُ قَالَ ثَوْبَانُ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قِلَّةٌ بِنَا قَالَ لَا أَنْتُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ كَثِيرٌ وَلَكِنْ يُلْقَى فِي قُلُوبِكُمُ الْوَهْنُ قَالُوا وَمَا الْوَهْنُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ حُبُّكُمُ الدُّنْيَا وَكَرَاهِيَتُكُمْ لِلْقِتَالِ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him): O Thawban! What will be your condition when people from other nations will rush upon you just as people rush upon a dish of food? Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, will we be few in number at that time? He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: No, you will be great in number, but weakness will be cast into your hearts. The people asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is this weakness? He (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Love of the world and dislike of jihad is called weakness.

Benefits: … The contemporary world of Islam has become a manifestation of this hadith; Muslims, due to love of the world, aversion to death, and awe of their enemies, have abandoned jihad. As a result, not only has the awe and prestige of Muslims and Islamic states vanished, but they themselves have become severely overawed in the face of their enemies.
