بَابُ مَا يَقُولُ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ
Chapter: What to say when going to bed
Hadith 1205
حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ، وَأَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالاَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَنَامَ قَالَ: ”بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا“، وَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ مِنْ مَنَامِهِ قَالَ: ”الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) intended to sleep, he would say: "With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live." And when he would wake up from sleep, he would say: "All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection."
Hadith 1206
حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ قَالَ: ”الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا، وَكَفَانَا وَآوَانَا، كَمْ مَنْ لا كَافٍّ لَهُ وَلا مُؤْوِيَ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to his bed, he would recite this supplication: «الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي ...... » “All praise is for Allah who has fed us, given us drink, sufficed us, and provided us with shelter, and how many are there who have no one to suffice them or provide them with shelter.”
Hadith 1207
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، وَيَحْيَى بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالاَ: حَدَّثَنَا شَبَابَةُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا يَنَامُ حَتَّى يَقْرَأَ: ﴿الم تَنْزِيلُ﴾ [سورة السجدة] وَ: ﴿تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ﴾ [سورة الملك]. قَالَ أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ: فَهُمَا يَفْضُلانِ كُلَّ سُورَةٍ فِي الْقُرْآنِ بِسَبْعِينَ حَسَنَةً، وَمَنْ قَرَأَهُمَا كُتِبَ لَهُ بِهِمَا سَبْعُونَ حَسَنَةً، وَرُفِعَ بِهِمَا لَهُ سَبْعُونَ دَرَجَةً، وَحُطَّ بِهِمَا عَنْهُ سَبْعُونَ خَطِيئَةً.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would certainly recite Surah Sajdah and Surah Mulk before sleeping. Abu Zubair says that these two surahs have seventy more virtues than every other surah of the Noble Qur'an; whoever recites both of them will have the reward of seventy good deeds written for him, his seventy ranks will be elevated, and seventy of his sins will be erased through them.
Hadith 1208
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَحْبُوبٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الأَحْوَلُ، عَنْ شُمَيْطٍ، أَوْ سُمَيْطٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الأَحْوَصِ قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: النَّوْمُ عِنْدَ الذِّكْرِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ، إِنْ شِئْتُمْ فَجَرِّبُوا، إِذَا أَخَذَ أَحَدُكُمْ مَضْجَعَهُ وَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَنَامَ فَلْيَذْكُرِ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), he says that sleep during the time of remembrance is from Satan. If you wish, you may try it. When any of you goes to bed and intends to sleep, he should remember Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
Hadith 1209
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لاَ يَنَامُ حَتَّى يَقْرَأَ: ﴿تَبَارَكَ﴾ [سورة الملك] وَ ﴿الم تَنْزِيلُ﴾ السَّجْدَةِ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would not go to sleep until he had recited Surah Al-Mulk and Alif Lam Meem As-Sajdah.
Hadith 1210
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدَةُ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”إِذَا أَوَى أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ، فَلْيَحِلَّ دَاخِلَةَ إِزَارِهِ، فَلْيَنْفُضْ بِهَا فِرَاشَهُ، فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَدْرِي مَا خَلَّفَ فِي فِرَاشِهِ، وَلْيَضْطَجِعْ عَلَى شِقِّهِ الأَيْمَنِ، وَلْيَقُلْ: بِاسْمِكَ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي، فَإِنِ احْتَبَسَتْ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ الصَّالِحِينَ“، أَوْ قَالَ: ”عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ.“
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When one of you goes to lie down on his bed, he should take the edge of his waist-wrapper and dust off his bed with it, for he does not know what may have come onto it after him. Then he should lie down on his right side and recite this supplication: 'In Your name, O Allah, I lay down my side. So if You take my soul, have mercy on it, and if You let it go, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.' Or he said: 'As You protect Your righteous slaves.'"
Hadith 1211
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الأَشَجُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ خَازِمٍ أَبُو بَكْرٍ النَّخَعِيُّ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَلاَءُ بْنُ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ نَامَ عَلَى شِقِّهِ الأَيْمَنِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ”اللَّهُمَّ وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، رَهْبَةً وَرَغْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، لاَ مَنْجَا وَلاَ مَلْجَأَ مِنْكَ إِلاَّ إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ“، قَالَ: ”فَمَنْ قَالَهُنَّ فِي لَيْلَةٍ ثُمَّ مَاتَ مَاتَ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would go to his bed, he would lie down on his right side, then recite this supplication: “O Allah! I have turned my face towards You, and I have entrusted my soul to You, and I have relied upon You, fearing You and desiring Your blessings. There is no refuge and no place of safety except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed, and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.” Then he said: “Whoever recites these words (with faith and certainty) at night and then dies that night, his death will be upon the natural disposition (fitrah).”
Hadith 1212
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُهَيْلُ بْنُ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ: ”اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ، وَرَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ، فَالِقَ الْحَبِّ وَالنَّوَى، مُنْزِلَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالإِنْجِيلِ وَالْقُرْآنِ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ كُلِّ ذِي شَرٍّ أَنْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهِ، أَنْتَ الأَوَّلُ فَلَيْسَ قَبْلَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْآخِرُ فَلَيْسَ بَعْدَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الظَّاهِرُ فَلَيْسَ فَوْقَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْبَاطِنُ فَلَيْسَ دُونَكَ شَيْءٌ، اقْضِ عَنِّي الدَّيْنَ، وَأَغْنِنِي مِنَ الْفَقْرِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lay down on his bed, he would recite: "O Allah! Lord of the heavens and the earth, Owner of all things, Splitter of the grain and the date-stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur'an. I seek refuge in You from the evil of every creature whose forelock is in Your hand. You are the First, there is nothing before You, and You are the Last, there is nothing after You. You are the Most High, there is nothing above You. You are the Most Near, there is nothing beyond You. Settle my debt for me and enrich me, relieving me from poverty."
