بَابُ: كَيْفَ أَصْبَحْتَ؟
Chapter: How are you this morning?
Hadith 1129
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْغَسِيلِ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ لَبِيدٍ قَالَ: لَمَّا أُصِيبَ أَكْحُلُ سَعْدٍ يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ فَثَقُلَ، حَوَّلُوهُ عِنْدَ امْرَأَةٍ يُقَالُ لَهَا: رُفَيْدَةُ، وَكَانَتْ تُدَاوِي الْجَرْحَى، فَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا مَرَّ بِهِ يَقُولُ: ”كَيْفَ أَمْسَيْتَ؟“، وَإِذَا أَصْبَحَ: ”كَيْفَ أَصْبَحْتَ؟“ فَيُخْبِرُهُ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mahmood bin Labeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of the Trench, when Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) had his vein cut and his pain increased greatly, they transferred him to a woman named Rufaidah who used to treat the wounded. Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by him, he would ask: “How did you spend your evening?” And when inquiring about his condition in the morning, he would ask: “How did you spend your morning?” So he would inform him of his condition.
Hadith 1130
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ صَالِحٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْكَلْبِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الزُّهْرِيُّ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الأَنْصَارِيُّ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ كَعْبُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ أَحَدَ الثَّلاَثَةِ الَّذِينَ تِيبَ عَلَيْهِمْ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ خَرَجَ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي وَجَعِهِ الَّذِي تُوُفِّيَ فِيهِ، فَقَالَ النَّاسُ: يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ، كَيْفَ أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ: أَصْبَحَ بِحَمْدِ اللهِ بَارِئًا، قَالَ: فَأَخَذَ عَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بِيَدِهِ، فَقَالَ: أَرَأَيْتُكَ؟ فَأَنْتَ وَاللَّهِ بَعْدَ ثَلاَثٍ عَبْدُ الْعَصَا، وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَأَرَى رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَوْفَ يُتَوَفَّى فِي مَرَضِهِ هَذَا، إِنِّي أَعْرِفُ وُجُوهَ بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ، فَاذْهَبْ بِنَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلْنَسْأَلْهُ: فِيمَنْ هَذَا الأَمْرُ؟ فَإِنْ كَانَ فِينَا عَلِمْنَا ذَلِكَ، وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي غَيْرِنَا كَلَّمْنَاهُ فَأَوْصَى بِنَا، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ: إِنَّا وَاللَّهِ إِنْ سَأَلْنَاهُ فَمَنَعَنَاهَا لَا يُعْطِينَاهَا النَّاسُ بَعْدَهُ أَبَدًا، وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لاَ أَسْأَلُهَا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَبَدًا.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came out from the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) during the illness in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away. The people asked: O Abu al-Hasan! How did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fare this morning? He replied: All praise is due to Allah, he is now better. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) took him by the hand and led him aside and said: Do you know! By Allah, after three days you will become the subjects of others, meaning you will be under the authority of others. And by Allah, I can see that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) will pass away in this illness, because I know how the faces of the sons of Abdul Muttalib look at the time of death. Let us go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and ask him about the caliphate. If it is to be among us, we will know it, and if it is to be among others, then we will ask him to make a will regarding us. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah! If we ask and he forbids us, then after him the people will never give us authority. By Allah! I will never ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about this matter.
