بَابُ: كَيْفَ الرَّدُّ عَلَى أَهْلِ الذِّمَّةِ؟
Chapter: How to reply to non-Muslims
Hadith 1106
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدُهُمْ، فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ، فَقُولُوا: وَعَلَيْكَ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any of the Jews greets you with Salam, he says: «السام علیک» (death be upon you), so you should also reply with «وعلیک» (death be upon you)."
Hadith 1107
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَوْرٍ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: رُدُّوا السَّلاَمَ عَلَى مَنْ كَانَ يَهُودِيًّا، أَوْ نَصْرَانِيًّا، أَوْ مَجُوسِيًّا، ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ: ﴿وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُمْ بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوا بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا﴾ [النساء: 86].
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: Give a reply of salam to every Jew, Christian, and Magian, because Allah the Exalted has said: "When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with one better than it or return it in like manner." [سورہ النساء: 86]
