It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) under the shade of a tree between Makkah and Madinah when an ill-mannered and harsh Bedouin came and said: «السلام علیکم»! He (the Prophet) said: "And upon you."
It is narrated from Abu Jamrah (may Allah have mercy on him) that I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he was greeted with Salam, he would reply: «وعلیک ورحمۃ الله».
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qaylah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: A man said: «السلام علیک یا رسول اللہ». The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied: "And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when he had finished the prayer. Thus, I was the first person to greet in the manner of Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah. Which tribe are you from?" I said: From the tribe of Ghifar.
Narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Aish! This is Jibreel who is conveying greetings to you." She says: I replied: «وعلیہ السلام ورحمۃ الله وبرکاتہ». You see what I do not see. By this, she meant the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

It is narrated from Muawiyah bin Qurrah, may Allah have mercy on him, that my father said to me: O my son! When a man passes by you and says «السلام علیکم», do not reply with «وعلیک» as if you are specifying him alone, rather say: «السلام علیکم».
