It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by some people among whom was a man wearing khuluq (a saffron-colored fragrance). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked at them, greeted them with salam, and turned his face away from that man. The man said: "Have you turned your face away from me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There is a burning coal of fire between his eyes."
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he had a gold ring in his hand. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned his face away from him. When that person saw the Prophet’s displeasure, he left and had the gold ring removed and made a ring of iron, which he wore and then came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “This is even worse than that. This is the adornment of the people of Hell.” He went away and threw it away and wore a silver ring. Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained silent.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from Bahrain came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and greeted him with salam, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not reply to his salam. This was because he had a gold ring on his hand and was wearing a silk cloak. The man left in distress and went to his wife and told her. She said: Perhaps the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was displeased with you because of your cloak and ring, so take them off and go back. He did so, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied to his salam. He said: I just came before and you turned away from me? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "There was a burning coal in your hand." He said: Then I have brought many coals. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "What you have brought (here) is of no more value to anyone than the stones of a stony land. But it is a provision of worldly life." He said: Then what kind of ring should I wear? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Wear a ring of silver, brass, or iron."
