Hadith 1014
حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الأَفْنِيَةِ وَالصُّعُدَاتِ أَنْ يُجْلَسَ فِيهَا، فَقَالَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ: لَا نَسْتَطِيعُهُ، لَا نُطِيقُهُ، قَالَ: ”أَمَّا لَا، فَأَعْطُوا حَقَّهَا“، قَالُوا: وَمَا حَقُّهَا؟ قَالَ: ”غَضُّ الْبَصَرِ، وَإِرْشَادُ ابْنِ السَّبِيلِ، وَتَشْمِيتُ الْعَاطِسِ إِذَا حَمِدَ اللَّهَ، وَرَدُّ التَّحِيَّةِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade sitting in open spaces in front of houses and on pathways. The Muslims said: We do not have the strength for this, meaning it is difficult for us to avoid it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If you cannot avoid it, then fulfill the rights of the pathway." The Companions asked: What are its rights? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Lowering the gaze, guiding the traveler, responding to one who sneezes and says «الحمد للہ», and returning greetings of peace."
Hadith 1015
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا كِنَانَةُ مَوْلَى صَفِيَّةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: أَبْخَلُ النَّاسِ مَنْ بَخِلَ بِالسَّلاَمِ، وَالْمَغْبُونُ مَنْ لَمْ يَرُدَّهُ، وَإِنْ حَالَتْ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ أَخِيكَ شَجَرَةٌ، فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَبْدَأَهُ بِالسَّلامِ لَا يَبْدَأُكَ فَافْعَلْ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The greatest miser is the one who is miserly in greeting (salam), and the one who suffers loss is the one who does not reply to the greeting. If a tree comes between you and your brother, and you are able to initiate the greeting, then do so.
Hadith 1016
حَدَّثَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مَيْسَرَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ، عَنْ حُسَيْنٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ مَوْلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ: وَكَانَ ابْنُ عَمْرٍو إِذَا سُلِّمَ عَلَيْهِ فَرَدَّ زَادَ، فَأَتَيْتُهُ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فَقُلْتُ: السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَقَالَ: السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى فَقُلْتُ: السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ، قَالَ: السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى فَقُلْتُ: السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، فَقَالَ: السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، وَطَيِّبُ صَلَوَاتِهِ.
Salim, the freed slave of Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah have mercy on him), narrates that when someone greeted Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) with salam, he would reply with even more words. I came to him while he was sitting, so I said: «السلام علیکم»! He replied: «السلام علیکم ورحمۃ اللہ»! I came again and said: «السلام علیکم ورحمۃ اللہ»! So he replied: «السلام علیکم ورحمۃ اللہ وبرکاتہ»! Then I came to him once more and said: «السلام علیکم ورحمۃ اللہ وبرکاتہ»! He replied: «السلام علیکم ورحمۃ اللہ وبرکاتہ وطبیب صلواتہ»! Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah, and His blessings, and His pure salutations.
