Hadith 1006
It is narrated from Tufail bin Abi bin Ka'b (may Allah have mercy on him), who stated that when he would come to (visit) Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he would take him to the market early in the morning. When we would go to the market, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would greet with salam every junk dealer, merchant, poor person, or any individual he passed by. Tufail says that one day I came to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he told me to go to the market. I submitted: What will you do by going to the market, when you neither stand for any buying or selling, nor do you ask about the price of any goods, nor do you finalize any deal, nor do you sit in the gatherings of the market? Please stay here with us. We will talk among ourselves. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: O Abu Batn! (Tufail, may Allah have mercy on him, had a somewhat large belly) We go to the market so that we may greet with salam whoever we meet.
