بَابُ: السَّلامُ اسْمٌ مِنْ أَسْمَاءِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ
Chapter: Salam is a name of Allah
Hadith 989
حَدَّثَنَا شِهَابٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”إِنَّ السَّلامَ اسْمٌ مِنْ أَسْمَاءِ اللهِ تَعَالَى، وَضَعَهُ اللَّهُ فِي الأَرْضِ، فَأَفْشُوا السَّلامَ بَيْنَكُمْ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “«السلام» is one of the names of Allah Almighty, which Allah has placed on the earth, so make salam common among yourselves.”
Hadith 990
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحِلٌّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ شَقِيقَ بْنَ سَلَمَةَ أَبَا وَائِلٍ يَذْكُرُ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: كَانُوا يُصَلُّونَ خَلْفَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الْقَائِلُ: السَّلاَمُ عَلَى اللهِ، فَلَمَّا قَضَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلاَتَهُ قَالَ: ”مَنِ الْقَائِلُ: السَّلاَمُ عَلَى اللهِ؟ إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ السَّلاَمُ، وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا: التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ“ قَالَ: وَقَدْ كَانُوا يَتَعَلَّمُونَهَا كَمَا يَتَعَلَّمُ أَحَدُكُمُ السُّورَةَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he said that they used to pray behind the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), when a man said: «السلام على اللہ» "Peace be upon Allah." When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: Who said, "Peace be upon Allah"? Allah Himself is Peace. Rather, you should say: «التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ» All verbal, physical, and financial acts of worship are for Allah alone. O Prophet, peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. And I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger. Then he said: The Companions used to learn it in this way as one of you learns a surah from the Qur'an.
