كتاب العطاس والتثاؤبBook of Sneezing and Yawning
بَابُ إِذَا لَمْ يَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ لا يُشَمَّتُ
Chapter: If he does not praise Allah, do not respond
Hadith 931
حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَنَسًا يَقُولُ: عَطَسَ رَجُلاَنِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَشَمَّتَ أَحَدَهُمَا، وَلَمْ يُشَمِّتِ الْآخَرَ، فَقَالَ: شَمَّتَّ هَذَا وَلَمْ تُشَمِّتْنِي؟ قَالَ: ”إِنَّ هَذَا حَمِدَ اللَّهَ، وَلَمْ تَحْمَدْهُ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he says that two men sneezed in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) responded to one of them but did not respond to the other. The one to whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not respond said, "You responded to him but not to me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He praised Allah, but you did not praise Allah."
Hadith 932
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلامٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا رِبْعِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ هُوَ أَخُو ابْنِ عُلَيَّةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: جَلَسَ رَجُلاَنِ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَشْرَفُ مِنَ الْآخَرِ، فَعَطَسَ الشَّرِيفُ مِنْهُمَا فَلَمْ يَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ، وَلَمْ يُشَمِّتْهُ، وَعَطَسَ الْآخَرُ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ، فَشَمَّتَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ الشَّرِيفُ: عَطَسْتُ عِنْدَكَ فَلَمْ تُشَمِّتْنِي، وَعَطَسَ هَذَا الْآخَرُ فَشَمَّتَّهُ، فَقَالَ: ”إِنَّ هَذَا ذَكَرَ اللَّهَ فَذَكَرْتُهُ، وَأَنْتَ نَسِيتَ اللَّهَ فَنَسِيتُكَ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that two men were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), one of whom was more honorable than the other. The more honorable one among them sneezed and did not say «الحمد لله», so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not respond to him. The other sneezed and said «الحمد للہ», so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him «يرحمك الله». Upon this, the honorable man said: "I sneezed in your presence but you did not respond to me, and you responded to him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He remembered Allah, so I remembered him; and you forgot Allah, so I forgot you."
