بَابُ كَيْفَ تَشْمِيتُ مَنْ سَمِعَ الْعَطْسَةَ
Chapter: How to respond to someone who hears a sneeze
Hadith 927
حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ”إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، فَإِذَا قَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، فَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ: يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ، وَلْيَقُلْ هُوَ: يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When one of you sneezes, he should say «الحمد للہ», and when he says «الحمد للہ», his brother or companion should say «يرحمك الله», and the one who sneezed should say: «يهديكم الله ويصلح بالكم» (May Allah guide you and set your condition right)."
Hadith 928
حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ”إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْعُطَاسَ، وَيَكْرَهُ التَّثَاؤُبَ، وَإِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ وَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ كَانَ حَقًّا عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ سَمِعَهُ أَنْ يَقُولَ: يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ. فَأَمَّا التَّثَاؤُبُ فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ، فَإِذَا تَثَاءَبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَرُدَّهُ مَا اسْتَطَاعَ، فَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ إِذَا تَثَاءَبَ ضَحِكَ مِنْهُ الشَّيْطَانُ.“
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah likes sneezing and dislikes yawning. When one of you sneezes and praises Allah, it is the right of every Muslim who hears him to say to him «يرحمك الله». As for yawning, it is from the devil, so when one of you feels like yawning, he should try his best to suppress it. When one of you yawns, the devil laughs at him.”
Hadith 929
حَدَّثَنَا حَامِدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي جَمْرَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ إِذَا شُمِّتَ: عَافَانَا اللَّهُ وَإِيَّاكُمْ مِنَ النَّارِ، يَرْحَمُكُمُ اللَّهُ.
It is narrated from Abu Jamrah (may Allah have mercy on him) that I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) saying in response to a sneeze: «عافانا الله وإياكم من النار، يرحمكم الله». May Allah save us and you from the Fire, and may Allah have mercy on you.
Hadith 930
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْلَى، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُنَيْنٍ وَهُوَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ كَيْسَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ“، ثُمَّ عَطَسَ آخَرُ، فَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَهُ شَيْئًا، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، رَدَدْتَ عَلَى الْآخَرِ، وَلَمْ تَقُلْ لِي شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ: ”إِنَّهُ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ، وَسَكَتَّ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a man sneezed and said «الحمد للہ», so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him «يرحمك الله». Then another man sneezed, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not say anything to him. So he said: O Messenger of Allah! You replied to him but you did not reply to me when I sneezed. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He praised Allah and you remained silent."
