بَابُ لَا تَسُبُّوا الرِّيحَ
Chapter: Do not curse the wind
Hadith 906
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، أَنَّ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: أَخَذَتِ النَّاسَ الرِّيحُ فِي طَرِيقِ مَكَّةَ - وَعُمَرُ حَاجٌّ - فَاشْتَدَّتْ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُ: مَا الرِّيحُ؟ فَلَمْ يَرْجِعُوا بِشَيْءٍ، فَاسْتَحْثَثْتُ رَاحِلَتِي فَأَدْرَكْتُهُ، فَقُلْتُ: بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ سَأَلْتَ عَنِ الرِّيحِ، وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ”الرِّيحُ مِنْ رَوْحِ اللهِ، تَأْتِي بِالرَّحْمَةِ، وَتَأْتِي بِالْعَذَابِ، فَلاَ تَسُبُّوهَا، وَسَلُوا اللَّهَ خَيْرَهَا، وَعُوذُوا مِنْ شَرِّهَا.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was on his way to Makkah Mukarramah for Hajj, a strong wind blew. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his companions: "What is the wind?" They did not give any answer. I quickly advanced my mount and reached him. I said: "I have come to know that you asked about the wind. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'The wind is Allah’s mercy; it brings mercy and it brings punishment. Therefore, do not speak ill of it, and ask Allah for its good, and seek refuge from its evil.'"
