بَابُ الشِّعْرُ حَسَنٌ كَحَسَنِ الْكَلَامِ وَمِنْهُ قَبِيحٌ
Chapter: Poetry Is Good Like Good Speech, and Some Is Bad
Hadith 864
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ زِيَادٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ”مِنَ الشِّعْرِ حِكْمَةٌ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, some poetry contains wisdom."
Hadith 865
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلامٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زِيَادِ بْنِ أَنْعُمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”الشِّعْرُ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْكَلاَمِ، حَسَنُهُ كَحَسَنِ الْكَلامِ، وَقَبِيحُهُ كَقَبِيحِ الْكَلامِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Poetry is like speech; good poetry is like good speech, and bad poetry is like bad speech."
Hadith 866
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ تَلِيدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي جَابِرُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، وَغَيْرُهُ، عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا، أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ تَقُولُ: الشِّعْرُ مِنْهُ حَسَنٌ وَمِنْهُ قَبِيحٌ، خُذْ بِالْحَسَنِ وَدَعِ الْقَبِيحَ، وَلَقَدْ رَوَيْتُ مِنْ شِعْرِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ أَشْعَارًا، مِنْهَا الْقَصِيدَةُ فِيهَا أَرْبَعُونَ بَيْتًا، وَدُونَ ذَلِكَ.
Narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she used to say: There are good poems and bad poems. Take the good poems and leave the bad ones. I have narrated many poems from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). Among them is a qasida which contains forty verses, and there are others as well.
Hadith 867
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا: أَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَتَمَثَّلُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الشِّعْرِ؟ فَقَالَتْ: كَانَ يَتَمَثَّلُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ شِعْرِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ رَوَاحَةَ: ”وَيَأْتِيكَ بِالأَخْبَارِ مَنْ لَمْ تُزَوِّدِ.“
It is narrated from Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) that I asked Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recite any poetry? She replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite as an example some verses from the poetry of Abdullah bin Rawahah: "He will bring you news of what you have not prepared for."
Hadith 868
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُبَارَكٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ، أَنَّ الأَسْوَدَ بْنَ سَرِيعٍ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ: كُنْتُ شَاعِرًا فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، امْتَدَحْتُ رَبِّي، فَقَالَ: ”أَمَا إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يُحِبُّ الْحَمْدَ“، وَمَا اسْتَزَادَنِي عَلَى ذَلِكَ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Aswad bin Sari’ (may Allah be pleased with him), he states: I was a poet, so I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have expressed the praise and glorification of my Lord (in poetry). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Why not, indeed your Lord loves praise.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not say anything more to me than this.
