It is narrated from Sayyiduna Basheer bin Nahik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he presented himself before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: "What is your name?" He said: Zahm. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "No, your name is Basheer." While I was walking with the Prophet (peace be upon him), he said: "O Ibn al-Khassasiyyah, did you feel displeasure at any decree of Allah while you are walking alongside the Messenger of Allah?" I said: May my parents be sacrificed for you! How could I feel displeasure at any decree of Allah when I have received every good? Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) came to the graves of the polytheists and said: "They have missed out on much good." Then he came to the graves of the Muslims and said: "These people have attained abundant good." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw a man walking among the graves wearing Sabti shoes, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O wearer of Sabti shoes, take off your Sabti shoes." So he took off his shoes.
Bashir's wife, Laila, relates about Bashir bin Al-Khasasiyyah that his name was Zahm, then the Prophet (ﷺ) changed his name to Bashir.
