Chapter: Shortening or Reducing Someone's Name
Hadith 827
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”يَا عَائِشُ، هَذَا جِبْرِيلُ يَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكِ السَّلاَمَ“، قَالَتْ: وَعَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، قَالَتْ: وَهُوَ يَرَى مَا لا أَرَى.
Narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Aish! This is Jibreel who is conveying greetings to you." She said: I replied, "Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon him as well." She said: You (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would see what I did not see.
Hadith 828
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْيَشْكُرِيُّ الْبَصْرِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَتْنِي جَدَّتِي أُمُّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتُ ثُمَامَةَ، أَنَّهَا قَدِمَتْ حَاجَّةً، فَإِنَّ أَخَاهَا الْمُخَارِقَ بْنَ ثُمَامَةَ قَالَ: ادْخُلِي عَلَى عَائِشَةَ، وَسَلِيهَا عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ، فَإِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ أَكْثَرُوا فِيهِ عِنْدَنَا، قَالَتْ: فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهَا فَقُلْتُ: بَعْضُ بَنِيكِ يُقْرِئُكِ السَّلاَمَ، وَيَسْأَلُكِ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ، قَالَتْ: وَعَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ، قَالَتْ: أَمَّا أَنَا فَأَشْهَدُ عَلَى أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ فِي هَذَا الْبَيْتِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ قَائِظَةٍ، وَنَبِيُّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَجِبْرِيلُ يُوحِي إِلَيْهِ، وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَضْرِبُ كَفَّ - أَوْ كَتِفَ - ابْنِ عَفَّانَ بِيَدِهِ: ”اكْتُبْ، عُثْمُ“، فَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ يُنْزِلُ تِلْكَ الْمَنْزِلَةَ مِنْ نَبِيِّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلاَّ رَجُلاً عَلَيْهِ كَرِيمًا، فَمَنْ سَبَّ ابْنَ عَفَّانَ فَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللهِ.
Narrated from Sayyida Umm Kulthum bint Thumamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when she came to Makkah for Hajj, her brother Makharraq bin Thumamah said: Go to Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and ask her about Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), because people among us talk a lot about him. She says: I went to her and said: Your son sends you greetings and asks about Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him). She replied: Peace and Allah’s mercy be upon him as well. She said: I testify that I saw Uthman in this house. It was a hot night, and it was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Jibreel Amin who brought revelation to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would pat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) on his arm or shoulder with his hand and say: “Uthm, write.” Whoever Allah grants such a status with His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he is certainly a person upon whom Allah is merciful. May Allah’s curse be upon the one who abuses Ibn Affan.
