بَابُ تَحْوِيلِ اسْمِ عَاصِيَةَ
Chapter: Changing the Name "Asiya"
Hadith 820
حَدَّثَنَا صَدَقَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ غَيْرَ اسْمَ عَاصِيَةَ وَقَالَ: ”أَنْتِ جَمِيلَةُ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) changed the name of ‘Asiyah and said: “You are Jameelah (beautiful).”
Hadith 821
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالاَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَطَاءٍ، أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، فَسَأَلَتْهُ عَنِ اسْمِ أُخْتٍ لَهُ عِنْدَهُ؟ قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: اسْمُهَا بَرَّةُ، قَالَتْ: غَيِّرِ اسْمَهَا، فَإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَكَحَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ جَحْشٍ وَاسْمُهَا بَرَّةُ، فَغَيَّرَ اسْمَهَا إِلَى زَيْنَبَ، وَدَخَلَ عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ حِينَ تَزَوَّجَهَا، وَاسْمِي بَرَّةُ، فَسَمِعَهَا تَدْعُونِي: بَرَّةَ، فَقَالَ: ”لَا تُزَكُّوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْبَرَّةِ مِنْكُنَّ وَالْفَاجِرَةِ، سَمِّيهَا زَيْنَبَ“، فَقَالَتْ: فَهِيَ زَيْنَبُ، فَقُلْتُ لَهَا: سَمِّي، فَقَالَتْ: غَيِّرْهُ إِلَى مَا غَيَّرَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَسَمِّهَا زَيْنَبَ.
It is narrated from Muhammad bin Amr bin Ata’ (may Allah have mercy on him) that he went to Sayyidah Zainab bint Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), and her sister was also with her. He asked: What is her name? He says: I said, her name is Barrah. She said: Change her name, because when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) married Sayyidah Zainab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), her name was Barrah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) changed her name to Zainab. And when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) married Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), my name was also Barrah. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard that she called me Barrah, he said: “Do not ascribe purity to yourselves; indeed, Allah knows best who among you is righteous and who is wicked. Change her name to Zainab.” She said: So now she is Zainab. Muhammad bin Amr says: I said, let her name be given. She said: You yourself change her name to the name with which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) changed it, and name her Zainab.
