بَابُ الْهَدْيِ وَالسَّمْتِ الْحَسَنِ
Chapter: Good Appearance and Conduct
Hadith 789
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي الأَسْوَدِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ حَصِيرَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ وَهْبٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَقُولُ: إِنَّكُمْ فِي زَمَانٍ: كَثِيرٌ فُقَهَاؤُهُ، قَلِيلٌ خُطَبَاؤُهُ، قَلِيلٌ سُؤَّالُهُ، كَثِيرٌ مُعْطُوهُ، الْعَمَلُ فِيهِ قَائِدٌ لِلْهَوَى. وَسَيَأْتِي مِنْ بَعْدِكُمْ زَمَانٌ: قَلِيلٌ فُقَهَاؤُهُ، كَثِيرٌ خُطَبَاؤُهُ، كَثِيرٌ سُؤَّالُهُ، قَلِيلٌ مُعْطُوهُ، الْهَوَى فِيهِ قَائِدٌ لِلْعَمَلِ، اعْلَمُوا أَنَّ حُسْنَ الْهَدْيِ، فِي آخِرِ الزَّمَانِ، خَيْرٌ مِنْ بَعْضِ الْعَمَلِ.
It is narrated from Zaid bin Wahb (may Allah have mercy on him) that I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: Indeed, you are in a time in which jurists are many and preachers are few, those who ask are few and those who give are many, and desires are subordinate to actions. And after you, a time will come in which jurists will be few and preachers will be many. Those who ask will be many and those who give will be few. Actions will be subordinate to desires. Know that in the last times, good manners will be better and superior than some deeds.
Hadith 790
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لَهُ: رَأَيْتَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، وَلاَ أَعْلَمُ عَلَى ظَهْرِ الأَرْضِ رَجُلاً حَيًّا رَأَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَيْرِي، قَالَ: وَكَانَ أَبْيَضَ، مَلِيحَ الْوَجْهِ. وَعَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ هَارُونَ، عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو الطُّفَيْلِ نَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ، قَالَ أَبُو الطُّفَيْلِ: مَا بَقِيَ أَحَدٌ رَأَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ غَيْرِي، قُلْتُ: وَرَأَيْتَهُ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قُلْتُ: كَيْفَ كَانَ؟ قَالَ: كَانَ أَبْيَضَ مَلِيحًا مُقَصَّدًا.
It is narrated from Jariri (may Allah have mercy on him) that I asked Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him), "Did you see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied, "Yes, and to my knowledge, there is no man alive on the face of the earth except me who has seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he said, "The complexion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was white and his blessed face was extremely beautiful."
In another chain, Jariri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I and Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him), that is, Amir bin Wathila al-Kinani, were performing Tawaf of the House of Allah when Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "No companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remains except me." I asked, "Did you see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said, "Yes!" I asked, "What was the appearance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) like?" He said, "The complexion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was white, his face was attractive and charming, and he was of medium height."

Hadith 791
حَدَّثَنَا فَرْوَةُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبِيدَةُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ قَابُوسَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: الْهَدْيُ الصَّالِحُ، وَالسَّمْتُ الصَّالِحُ، وَالِاقْتِصَادُ، جُزْءٌ مِنْ خَمْسَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ جُزْءًا مِنَ النُّبُوَّةِ. ¤ حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا قَابُوسُ، أَنَّ أَبَاهُ حَدَّثَهُ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ”إِنَّ الْهَدْيَ الصَّالِحَ ، وَالسَّمْتَ الصَّالِحَ ، وَالاقْتِصَادَ ، جُزْءٌ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ جُزْءًا مِنَ النُّبُوَّةِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Good character and good habits, as well as moderation, are one part out of twenty-five parts of Prophethood."
In another chain of narration, it is also reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Good character, good habits, and moderation in spending are one part out of seventy parts of Prophethood."
In another chain of narration, it is also reported from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Good character, good habits, and moderation in spending are one part out of seventy parts of Prophethood."
