It is narrated from 'Adi bin Aratah, may Allah have mercy on him, that among the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) there was a person who, when his piety was mentioned in front of him, would say: "O Allah! Do not hold me accountable for what these people are saying, and forgive (the sins) which these people do not know about me."

It is narrated from Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abu Abdullah said to Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both), or Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud asked Sayyiduna Abu Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): "What have you heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding 'za‘m' (claim/assumption)?" He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a bad mount for a man."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: O Abu Mas’ud! What have you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the word “za’amu” (they claim)? He said: I heard him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “This word is the worst mount of a man.” And I heard him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Cursing a believer is like killing him.”
